Are you a black male who wants to pursue nursing or is already enrolled in a nursing program? There are scholarships set specifically for you to assist with the cost of your nursing education and they are listed here.
I have never seen a male nurse, well, except in movies and in about a handful of movies for that matter. In fact, the first time I saw a male nurse in a movie, I was surprised and asked the people around me whether something like that existed, and guess what, they were just as surprised as I was. Well, you wouldn’t blame my naivety, I was a child probably between 7-10 years old and this was in the 90s.
Male nurses were unheard of at the time, especially in my part of the world. However, I later learned that male nurses exist and a man can truly become a nurse. It was hard for me to take in at the time because I have always felt that the natural or normal order is that men are the doctors and females are the nurses. You should also see the shock on my face when I learned that women too can become doctors.
Male nurses are very few and that is because the nursing profession is dominated by women who make up over 85% of the workforce. The lack of men in this profession can be traced back to history when, in the 1850s men were barred from attending nursing school, and also to gender stereotypes or stigmas.
Back then, the nursing profession was generally thought of as a woman’s occupation and this can be owed to the distorted perception that women are naturally compassionate, empathetic, and gentle compared to men, which is actually true but that has nothing to do with the profession.
Many people, men especially, still think this way, and this is one of the reasons why males shy away from taking nursing programs forgetting that it is the training and expertise that matters. Anyways, this is the 21st century where anyone can be in any career they want as long as they acquire the right education and qualifications.
So, if you are male and you want to become a nurse, there is nothing to be ashamed of, just go for it. You are going to make a great nurse and you get to receive scholarships to support the cost of your education. You must have heard, seen, or read the phrase “underrepresented minority in nursing”, Male nurses are categorized under the underrepresented nursing minority and that is because there are so few of them.
So, if you are a male nursing student, enrolled or aspiring, and you come across nursing scholarships for minorities or you find scholarships for minorities in healthcare, by all means, apply for them except if the requirement states that it is specifically for women. In addition to those, you can apply for the black male nursing scholarships curated here but you have to be an African-American to qualify.
