1. UBC International Scholars Program Awards
The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers four need-and-merit-based awards to students with excellent academic records, demonstrated exceptional extracurricular activities and desire to create global change, and are dedicated to giving back to their schools and communities. African students who meet these criteria can be eligible for any of the four awards to study engineering at UBC.
The four awards are the; Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, International Impact Award, and Vantage One Excellence Award. Each of these awards has its specific requirements but they are all for international students. Through these 4 awards, UBC offers 50 scholarships every year to students from all walks of life.
There is no separate application for each of the awards, there is just one application. The management will select winners based on the award they think they are eligible for. You must also be applying to UBC for an undergraduate degree program like engineering or already enrolled in an undergraduate program to be eligible to win any of the awards.
2. The University of Lincoln’s Africa Scholarship
This scholarship is only for African students, so there will be less competition compared to the other scholarships for all international students with Africans included. The scholarship is for African students who want to pursue a postgraduate degree program like engineering at the University of Lincoln in the UK.
The worth of the scholarship is £4,000 and is awarded to eligible students as a tuition fee discount during the first year of their studies. The scholarship is not fully-funded but since it is only for Africans, it may go a long way in helping you reduce the cost of tuition at Lincoln.
3. UBC Merit-based Awards
Here is another scholarship award from the University of British Columbia (UBC) to African and other international students who have been newly accepted into an undergraduate degree program directly from secondary school. The UBC merit-based award comprises of two scholarships; International Major Entrance Scholarship and Outstanding International Student Award.
You won’t have to apply for any of the scholarships, you will automatically be considered for any of the merit-based awards based on your academic performance and involvement in extracurricular activities. The awards are available every year.
4. Nottingham Trent University International Scholarships
Nottingham Trent University is one of the top universities in the UK and names one of the top 55 global student cities. African students can earn a reputable engineering degree at Nottingham Trent University through a scholarship and not spend so much on the cost of tuition. To apply for the International Scholarships, you must have had an offer to study a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course at NTU.
There are up to 5 different categories of scholarships for international students and they all present mouth-watering values especially the NTU Excellence Scholarships and Confetti Excellence Scholarshiwhichat offer 25% and 50% of tuition fee waivers.
5. York University International Scholarships and Awards
The Faculty of Science at York University offers four International Scholarships and Awards to African students and students from other countries who want to study engineering or a related undergraduate program at York U. Excellent academic records and leadership abilities are the major criteria that are used to assess students for the scholarships.
The four scholarships are:
- International Entrance Scholarship of Distinction worth $140,000 for a total of 4 years.
- Global Leader of Tomorrow Award for International Students worth $80,000 for a total of 4 years.
- International Circle of Scholar’s Scholarship worth $15,000
- York University Academic Excellence Scholarships for International Students are valued at $5,000 to $10,000.
There are no separate applications for each of the awards. There is just one and when you apply, you are automatically applying for all but you will only be picked for one. Also, students do not need an offer of admission to apply for York entrance awards and scholarships. This is an opportunity for African students to pursue an engineering program at York University, one of the best universities in Canada.
6. Gus Archie Scholarship Program
This scholarship is provided by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and it is awarded to a student from any country who demonstrates outstanding academic capabilities and wants to study petroleum engineering at the undergraduate level. African students who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering can apply for this scholarship and siphon it into any school they want to attend.
The scholarship recipient will receive $5,000 per year for 4 years. This scholarship is based on merit and you must be a member of SPE to qualify. The scholarship is offered annually.
7. The University of Glasgow African Partners Award
The University of Glasgow African Partners Award is targeted at international African students who want to pursue a 1-year postgraduate taught master’s program at the University of Glasgow in engineering or any discipline. The scholarship is awarded annually to 15 students.
Applicants must be a student or members of staff at one of the university partners in Africa and have excellent academic records in their undergraduate degree to be considered for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is a full tuition fee waiver.
8. York Science Scholars Award (YSSA)
African students who want to pursue a career in engineering may consider applying to York University and stand a chance to win the York Science Scholars Award. This award is worth $10,000 and is provided to 25 first-year students entering the University’s Faculty of Science. The scholarship is offered annually too and it is for all students, so, expect the selection and competition would be high.
Applicants are assessed based on high academic achievement, passion for science and community service, leadership abilities, involvement in extracurricular activities, and high English language scores for international applicants. A reference, personal statements, and a complete application form are the required documents to apply for YSSA.
9. Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship

Pearson International Scholarship at the University of Toronto. This is one of the best scholarships for international students because of the many opportunities it offers.
The scholarship covers tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for 4 years. It is offered annually to 35 students who meet the requirements. Note that the scholarship is tenable only at U of T for first-entry, undergraduate programs.
10. Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarship
RTP Stipend Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to students who want to pursue a research-based program at the postgraduate level. The fund is targeted at assisting students with living costs while they are undertaking this research program. The scholarship is funded by the Australian Government and is worth $32,000 per year for up to 3 years.
11. Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (GUIPRS)
Griffith University in Australia is offering a generous scholarship package to international students who want to pursue a research-based program. The scholarship covers three years of tuition fees for doctoral candidates and 2 years for master’s candidates. This can help African students who want to pursue a research-based engineering degree program to get the funding they need to complete their studies.
