If you are a vegetarian or planning to become a vegetarian, then this blog post is about to reveal some of the scholarships for vegetarians you can apply for.
If you are an avid visitor to this website, then you must have come across a similar article on scholarships for vegetarians, meaning that you must know who a vegetarian is and what being a vegetarian entails. But to refresh your memory, I will put you through briefly on who and what a vegetarian is.
Simply put, a vegetarian is someone who does not consume meat. In other words, vegetarianism is the practice of abstaining from the consumption of meat. It may also include abstaining from eating all by-products of animal slaughter. There are many categories of vegetarian diet, some of which are; an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, which includes both eggs and dairy products, an ovo-vegetarian diet which includes eggs but not dairy products, and a lacto-vegetarian diet which includes dairy products but not eggs.
As the strictest of vegetarian diets, a vegan diet excludes all animal products and can be accompanied by abstention from the use of animal-derived products, such as silk, leather, wool, etc. as well. There are many reasons why people become vegetarians, some of these reasons are health, ecological, and religious concerns, dislike of meat, compassion for animals, belief in non-violence, and economics.
One of the good things about being a vegetarian as this article will dwell on is that you can turn your love for veggies into something of benefit to you by accruing scholarships for vegetarians. There are lots of other scholarships you can apply for like the agricultural scholarships for individuals who want to pursue a career in agriculture and also the eating disorder scholarship as the name implies. Without further ado, let’s get into the main focus of this blog post.

The scholarship is funded by People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to ending the abusive treatment of animals in business and society and promoting the consideration of animal interests in everyday decision-making, policies, and practices. On a rolling basis, their Future Without Speciesism Cash Award regularly grants between $1,000 and $10,000 to students based on the workability, practicality, and promise of their suggested inventions. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must come up with a game-changing idea for an invention that can be developed into a specific action plan or design to replace animal use. Students can work in teams or as individuals.
3. The Vegan Society Grants
The Vegan Society Grants are open to vegan individuals and grassroots organizations that support projects that will encourage non-vegans to go vegan and stay vegan and who can positively raise public awareness of veganism. The grants are funded by The Vegan Society, a registered educational charity that provides information and guidance on various aspects of veganism. Quarterly (every three months), the grant awards $1,000 to a vegan or a non-profit organization or an individual who submits the best proposed veganism-related projects. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a vegan or an organization that designs projects that will encourage non-vegans to go and stay vegan. It is another one on the list of scholarships for vegetarians.
4. Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group Research Grant
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is an organization of food and nutrition professionals that offers information on nutrition and health to help individuals prevent or better manage their health conditions. Each year, the Grant awards $10,000 to a registered dietitian or a dietetic graduate/doctoral student who is a member of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group. The award money must be used for innovative research relating to vegetarian nutrition.
5. Vegetarian Charity Grants
The Vegetarian Charity Grants are open to vegetarians and vegans aged 25 and younger or parents with a vegetarian child who need help paying for specific courses, projects, or equipment, or in cases of individual poverty. The scholarship is funded by The Vegetarian Charity, a registered charity that exists to help young vegetarians and vegans in financial need. On a rolling basis, the grant awards up to $500 to vegetarian/vegan students (or the parents of a vegetarian/vegan child) under the age of 26 who need help paying for school-related equipment. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a vegetarian aged 25 and younger, or the parents of a vegetarian child who needs help paying for school-related equipment or resources.
6. Vegetarian Video Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by The Vegetarian Resource Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on veganism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. Students only need to submit a video relating to what they want to tell others about vegetarianism and veganism. The scholarship awards one (1) $200 and two (2) $100 to the creators of the winning videos which should ideally contain humor, not be critical to anyone, and include no footage of animal cruelty. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be a student willing to submit a video and brief statement about what you want to tell others about vegetarianism/veganism.
7. The Eleanor Miltimore Wolff Scholarship
This scholarship is offered by the Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship in memory of Eleanor Miltimore Wolff who became a committed vegan late in life. Once she learned and understood that dietary choices affected not only one’s health but also the health of the planet and the well-being of the animals, there was no looking back. Leather shoes and purses, along with non-vegan food products went out the door. Her children and grandchildren were showered with vegan reading material. The scholarship offers a $4,200 paid internship at the VRG office in Baltimore for a student who:
- Wants to be an effective change agent on behalf of vegetarianism
- Is motivated to use the knowledge gained from the internship to make a significant impact within his/her world
- Could not participate in this development effort without a little financial assistance
Currently, the Eleanor Miltimore Wolff Scholarship funds one internship per year. VRG also has unpaid internships available.
Conclusion
All these scholarships I have mentioned here are strictly for vegetarians. So, if you are a vegetarian, do not hesitate to apply for anyone of your choice.
